All TV series must eventually come to an end, no matter how hard it may be for fans to say goodbye. Whether they got canceled or ended on their own terms with one last season, these series have all aired or will air their final episodes over the last year.

So which shows should you prepare to say a final farewell to? Here’s a look at the TV comedies and dramas that have come to an end or are ending soon. We’ll also take a look at the TV shows that are on the brink of being canceled or have been renewed — at least for now.

Arcane

That’s right everyone. The popular series based on League of Legends has finally been confirmed for a second season. The previous season had a six year production cycle, so it’s likely it won’t be out for some time. But it’s certain to be well worth the wait.

The Walking Dead

Dancing With The Stars

ABC’s long-running dance competition series has been renewed for a whopping 30th season. With this latest renewal, Dancing with the Stars has jumped into the top three longest-running unscripted series on a broadcast network, behind only CBS’s Survivor and The Amazing Race. HBO’s pot-themed comedy has come to an end after four seasons. Nearly a year after the finale of its last season, the network confirmed that the series has puffed and passed.

“Co-creators Katja Blichfeld and Ben Sinclair have decided to take a break from producing High Maintenance to pursue other projects,” HBO said in a statement, per Deadline. “We look forward to hearing what they come up with next.”

What We Do in the Shadows

This comedy mockumentary series is about a group of vampires going through their daily lives. An adaptation of the New Zealand film series of the same name, it has been wildly popular since its first season. This series’ fourth season will be airing on FX.

American Gods

American Gods is over at Starz. The premium cable network canceled the drama, based on Neil Gaiman’s novel of the same name, after three seasons. While the show won’t be returning for another full season, there is still a possibility that fans will get a proper ending. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Starz is considering a movie or limited event series to wrap up the story.

This Is Us

Disney+ has decided not to move forward with a second season of the space drama, The Right Stuff. The series, starring Patrick J. Although, Warner Bros. Television is looking to shop the show to other networks.

Black-ish

The show, which counts Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Jillian Bell, Ike Barinholtz and Kumail Nanjiani as members of its voice cast, wrapped its second and final season in May 2021.

Don’t Be Tardy

The Ellen DeGeneres Show

Ellen DeGeneres is ending her long-running daytime talk show. The NBC series will conclude for good in May of this year, following the end of its 19th season. The announcement comes as Denegeres’ contract is set to end that year and follows a tumultuous year for both the host and the show, which faced claims of a toxic workplace environment in 2020.

Sex Education

Sex Education, Netflix’s critically acclaimed high school dramedy headlined by Asa Butterfield and Gillian Anderson, will return for a fourth season. The series, equal parts raunchy, hilarious, and heartbreaking, is riding high right now with a Certified Fresh third season at 100% on the Tomatometer. The fourth season was announced during Netflix’s TUDUM global fan event.

Better Call Saul

Better Call Saul will return for a sixth and final season. Though AMC renewed the series in January 2020, production on the last season only began in March 2021, due to COVID-related delays. The final season is set to debut in April of this year.

ABC has pulled the plug on family sitcom Call Your Mother. The show starred Kyra Sedgwick as a Midwestern empty-nester who reinserts herself into the lives of her children in Los Angeles.

Sedgwick announced the cancellation on Twitter, hinting that she was less than pleased with ABC’s treatment of the show. “You guys have been so wonderful to tune in every week, or every other week or every two weeks!” she wrote on Twitter. “The rollout was nuts!”

Law & Order: Organized Crime

Stabler is sticking around New York City. NBC has renewed Law & Order: Organized Crime, which marked the return of Chris Meloni as his iconic character from Law & Order: SVU. According to TVLine, season two will likely consist of three eight-episode arcs for a total of 24 episodes and feature more crossovers with SVU.

American Idol

ABC is bringing back its version of American Idol for season five. Though host Ryan Seacrest and judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie aren’t currently signed for the next season, all four are expected to return, according to Deadline.

HouseBroken is one of the many animated shows airing on FX right now. Focusing on a therapy dog named Honey, she explores of human psychology and neurosis by leading a group of neighborhood animals in group therapy sessions. After a somewhat lukewarm reception, it’s been renewed for a second season.

American Horror Stories

The spin-of of the award-winning anthology series American Horror Story has certainly gained its own following, even if it hasn’t received the best reviews. American Horror Stories has been renewed for a second season to be continued on FX.

B Positive

B Positive has returned for its second season on CBS. The freshman comedy featuring Thomas Middleditch and Annaleigh Ashford, follows a newly divorced dad who is faced with finding a kidney donor. When a woman from his past volunteers her own, the two form an unlikely lifelong bond. 

United States Of Al

United States of Al has returned for its second season. Starring Adhir Kalyan and Parker Young, the show centers on the friendship between a Marine combat veteran struggling to readjust to civilian life in Ohio and the interpreter who served with his unit in Afghanistan and has just arrived to start a new life in America.

Resident Alien

Calling all sci-fi fans: Resident Alien is back for season two. SyFy confirmed the renewal of the hit dramedy, starring Alan Tudyk, just ahead of the first season finale. The news should come as no surprise, given the show’s high viewership. According to Deadline, Resident Alien wrapped up its freshman season as the most-watched new cable drama in the last year.

Blue Bloods

This Tom Selleck starrer is sticking around and going strong. Though there was some question surrounding whether the veteran drama would return amid ongoing contract negotiations, the 11th season kicked off in December 2020. The Blacklist

The Blacklist has returned for season 9. The network issued an early renewal to the veteran drama, tied to the celebration of its 150th episode. The news doesn’t come as a surprise. The original cast members, including stars James Spader and Megan Boone, renegotiated their contracts over the last several months in anticipation of the renewal.

Duncanville

Fox gave its animated family comedy, Duncanville, a strong show of support, preemptively renewing the series for a third season ahead of its season two premiere. The show centers on a highly imaginative 15-year-old boy (voiced by Amy Poehler) and his family.

For Life

For Life snagged a last-minute pickup last season, but it wasn’t able to pull the same feat this year. After just two seasons, ABC has opted to cancel the legal drama, inspired by the life of Isaac Wright Jr. who became a licensed attorney after getting his wrongful conviction overturned while in prison. According to Deadline, the series will now be shopped around to other platforms.

Rebel

Just five episodes into its freshman season, ABC’s Rebel was been canceled. Inspired by the life of Erin Brockovich, the drama starred Katey Sagal as a blue-collar legal advocate who doesn’t have a law degree but is desperately passionate about the causes she fights for.   

Per Deadline, the series was canceled after Rebel underperformed in ratings, despite having Grey’s Anatomy as a lead-in.

The Chase

ABC is continuing to boost its slate of game shows. The network has brought back its adaptation of the British game show, The Chase, for a supersized second season. The renewal comes after the writers briefly went on strike before later resolving their dispute with producers ITV America. 

The Hustler

The Hustler, hosted by Craig Ferguson, recently wrapped up its second season. The show follows five contestants as they collaborate to answer a series of 10 trivia questions worth $10,000 each, with the goal of building a bigger prize pot. 

Star Trek: Lower Decks

Star Trek: Lower Decks is sticking around for at least one more season. After previously announcing plans for the launch of a sophomore season in summer 2021, Paramount+ has just renewed the animated show for season three. The series follows the members of the support crew serving on one of Starfleet’s least important ships, the U.S.S. Cerritos, in 2380.

Snowfall

FX issued an early fifth season renewal to Snowfall in March 2021, just a few episodes into season four. The crime drama, which takes place in South Central Los Angeles in the 1980s, has seen a boost in viewership in its latest season. According to Deadline, ratings are up 41% in comparison to season three, now averaging over 5 million viewers across all platforms. 

The Equalizer

CBS has brought back The Equalizer for a second season. The show, which stars Queen Latifah in a reboot of the 1980s series, has maintained solid ratings since its February debut. Per The Hollywood Reporter, the first four episodes averaged about 11.5 million viewers, making it the most-watched show (excluding sports) on network TV this season.

Central Park

Get ready for another visit to Central Park. Apple TV+ has renewed the hit animated musical comedy for a third season, ahead of its sophomore season’s summer premiere. Season two will follow the quirky Tillerman family as they live within and care for one of the world’s most famous parks. According to Variety, the forthcoming two seasons will consist of 29 total episodes and feature a whopping 115 new songs.

Outlander

Outlander has been renewed for a seventh season at Starz. The historical drama’s next season will include 12 episodes based on author Diana Gabaldon’s novel, An Echo in the Bone. Series stars Caitriona Balfe, Sam Heughan, Sophie Skelton and Richard Rankin, who are currently filming season six in Scotland, will return for the upcoming season.

Selling Sunset

Netflix has officially confirmed that its hit real estate reality show has been renewed for a fifth season. Though the streamer didn’t reveal when the next season will air, it confirmed that all of the main cast members will be returning, including Jason and Brett Oppenheim, Chrishell Stause, Christine Quinn, Mary Fitzgerald, Romain Bonnet, Heather Rae Young, Amanza Smith, Maya Vander and Davina Potratz.

Bling Empire

The opulent Bling Empire will continue its reign for a second season. Netflix confirmed news of the renewal in March 2021, approximately two months after the reality series first premiered. A release date for the upcoming season has not been announced. 

Bridgerton

After previously getting picked up for a second season, Netflix’s period drama, Bridgerton, has scored yet another renewal. Just a few months after greenlighting season two of the hit show, the streaming service has confirmed the series will also be returning for seasons three and four.

The multi-season renewal is no surprise, as Bridgerton was a massive success in its first season, garnering record-breaking viewership and overwhelmingly positive reviews from both critics and audiences. 

Eli Roth’s History Of Horror

After three seasons, it appears as though AMC has seen enough of Eli Roth’s discussion of the horror genre. It was a spooky ride while it lasted, but there’s only so much to say.   

The Weakest Link

NBC’s revival of The Weakest Link has been renewed for a second season. Glee star Jane Lynch will return as the host and executive producer for the next season, which will run for 13 episodes.

“I’m thrilled that ‘Weakest Link’ will return for another season,” Lynch said in a statement. “It has been my honor to bring back this classic game show loved by millions.”

Saved By The Bell

Bayside High is back in session. Peacock’s Saved by the Bell revival was renewed for a 10-episode second season. The show, based on the classic ’90s series, follows the students at a school in current-day Los Angeles. Zack Morris is the governor of California and his son, Mac, now attends Zack’s old high school, Bayside High. Original cast members Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Tiffani Thiessen, Elizabeth Berkley Lauren, Mario Lopez and Lark Voorhies all reprised their roles in the revival. However, a third season has not yet been announced.

All Rise

TNT’s Snowpiercer has recently premiered its third season. Animal Kingdom

When Calls The Heart

Hallmark Channel’s flagship series When Calls the Heart has been renewed for a ninth season. According to TVLine, series star Erin Krakow announced the news during the season eight finale. The show will return for its next season in March 2022. 

Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Brooklyn Nine-Nine has come to an end… again. The former Fox comedy was previously saved from cancellation by NBC, which aired its sixth and seventh seasons in 2019 and 2020. But after its final 10 episode season last fall, the show has finally come to a close.

Charmed

The CW also issued a renewal to its Charmed reboot. The show, based on the iconic 1998 series, will return for a fourth season, despite a dip in viewership with its most recent episodes. 

“Though we’re just a few weeks into the new season, we wanted to get a strategic head start on next season with these early renewals, which allows our production teams to start laying out story arcs and hiring staff, and at the same time, continues to provide us with a strong, stable schedule to build on for next season,” Mark Pedowitz, chairman and CEO of the CW Network, explained. 

Riverdale

Riverdale will also be returning to the CW’s slate. The Archie Comics-inspired drama has been renewed for a sixth season, which began airing last November. During its fifth season, the show made a seven-year time jump, taking the characters out of high school and into their early post-college years, with the latest season delving deeper into this time period.

Lucifer

Fans of Fuller House and its predecessor, Full House, will say goodbye to the Tanners and their crew of friends once again. Last year, Netflix announced that the fifth season of Fuller House will also be its last.

The first half of the final season aired in late 2019, with the second half airing in June 2020. Lori Loughlin, the Full House actress who is currently facing fraud and money laundering charges related to the massive college admissions scandal, did not make an appearance.

Vienna Blood

Ozark

Netflix had renewed the Chuck Lorre-created comedy starring Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin for a third and final run. “The Kominsky Method has been a true passion project for me and it’s been an incredible experience to see the warm response from both audiences and critics. I’m excited to wrap up the story with this final chapter,” Lorre said of the renewal in a statement, Variety reported.

The Rookie

Following strong ratings in its third season, ABC picked up The Rookie for a fourth season. The cop drama stars Nathan Fillion as John Nolan, the oldest rookie at the Los Angeles Police Department. According to Deadline, the series averaged nearly 10 million total viewers this season. 

Grey’s Anatomy

ABC had announced that Grey’s Anatomy will be renewed at least through Season 18, with star Ellen Pompeo extending her contract to continue playing Dr. Meredith Grey. The medical drama’s, currently in that 18th season and remains one of ABC’s most-watched scripted shows. 

Original cast members Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr. were able to return this season, while longtime cast members Giacomo Gianniotti and Jesse Williams departed the show in more recently. 

The Flash

The Flash will continue to anchor The CW’s Arrowverse, following the conclusion of Arrow last year. The superhero series has been renewed for an eighth season, tying it for the longest-running DC Comics show on the CW. Also coming back for more in the Arrowverse: the newly recast Batwoman, which has been renewed for a second season, and the ensemble series Legends of Tomorrow, which will return for season seven.

The Resident

After earning only modest ratings in its first and second seasons, The Resident continued to see a dip in viewership in season three. According to TVSeriesFinale, the Fox show earns about 3.8 million weekly viewers, approximately 23% less than its preceding season. Despite the decline in ratings, the network renewed the series for a fourth, and later fifth season, the latter of which kicked off in September 2021.

Carol’s Second Act

The show, which featured Tiffany Haddish and Ali Wong in lead vocal roles, earned strong reviews from critics, but that apparently wasn’t enough to draw in viewers. Netflix announced the cancellation in July, with creator Lisa Hanawalt confirming the news on Twitter shortly after.

BoJack Horseman

Will & Grace has officially come to an end — for the second time. The hit sitcom concluded for good following the conclusion of its 2019-2020 season, which marked the 11th season of the overall series.

“We think of the Will & Grace [revival] episodes the way Karen Walker thinks of martinis — 51 is not enough, 53 is too many,” executive producers Max Mutchnick, David Kohan and James Burrows said in a statement prior to the release. “That is why, after consulting with the cast, we all have decided this will be the final season of Will & Grace.”

According to Deadline, Warner Bros. Television, the studio behind the Riverdale spinoff, is currently exploring options to keep the show going. 

The Baker & The Beauty

After 17 years, Carson Daly bid adieu to his late-night series, Last Call with Carson Daly. The TV host explained on Twitter that he was leaving the series to focus on some of his other projects.

“I want to focus more on @TODAYshow and @NBCTheVoice & other areas I’m passionate about within our company,” he wrote. “For example, The Golf Channel has always been a favorite & we have a few exciting things in the works. I look forward to building on that.” He added that his family will always remain his top priority.
